Head of department: Miss Grieve
The English Faculty at Cardinal Newman Catholic School aim to foster a love of language and literature and enable students to become reflective readers, skilled writers, confident speakers andcreative thinkers. We work as a team to plan our curriculum so that it is stimulating and enjoyable, with a variety of activities that enable students to investigate texts and explore the ways in which meanings are communicated. The focus on the development of students' literacy is implemented through student and teacher assessment; these assessments are used to provide the students with clear targets that will allow them to progress in all aspects of their learning. We encourage students to become independent readers and to read for pleasure.
KS3 Extra-Curricular Activities
Film Club is offered to KS3 on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes in Room 34. There will be a weekly schedule produced to include films of U, PG and 12 certification with previous options including The Hunger Games trilogy and the Harry Potter series. Each half term there will also be the opportunity to enter a competition for writing the best film review at the end of each half term.
Public Speaking/Debating Club
Students will be given the opportunity to make speeches, presentations and possibly perform on stage in order to build their confidence in speaking aloud. The fear of speaking in front of an audience is something we feel should be beaten therefore support and guidance shall be offered throughout. There will also be regular local and national school’s debating competitions within the Catholic Schools Alliance as a way to showcase the newly acquired skills.
