Curriculum Intent
The Mathematics Department at SJHN aims to develop confident, resilient and curious learners who can understand and shape the world through logical thinking and problem-solving. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, students are encouraged to explore patterns, reason mathematically and apply their learning to real-world contexts.
The department follows the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 and GCSE, building on the numeracy foundation from Key Stage 2. Students progress from fundamental skills to more advanced problem-solving, with opportunities to pursue A Level Mathematics. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students are encouraged to flourish as independent learners, develop fluency and reasoning and the ability to apply mathematical understanding in unfamiliar situations. As they progress, they develop a thirst for knowledge, growing in confidence to tackle complex problems and recognising mathematics as both a powerful tool and a universal language.
Furthermore, we strive to develop questioning minds who demonstrate perseverance, integrity and resilience when faced with challenge. Students are encouraged to think logically, communicate reasoning clearly and approach problems creatively.
We seek to develop students’ cultural capital and ethical awareness, fostering a hunger for justice by showing how mathematics underpins technology, science, finance and decision-making in the wider world. Through this, students are encouraged to lead with kind hearts, recognising the importance of using their mathematical understanding responsibly for the benefit of others. Solving these challenges demands creativity, abstract thinking and the ability to apply knowledge in new and unpredictable ways, with students recognising the crucial role mathematicians play in shaping future technologies and society.
By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable, reflective and confident mathematicians, students are equipped to reason logically, solve problems and apply their mathematical skills responsibly to contribute positively to the world.
