Curriculum intent

In the words of Steve Jobs,

Everyone should learn how to program a computer; it teaches you to how to think.”

The Computer Science Department at SJHN aims to develop logical, creative and resilient learners who understand how digital systems shape the modern world. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they explore how technology influences everyday life and the future of society.

We aim for students to flourish as confident problem-solvers through an engaging and rapidly evolving curriculum that reflects the importance of computing in a globally competitive world. Students build a thirst for knowledge as they develop programming, computational thinking and digital literacy skills.

Computer science underpins almost every aspect of modern life, from smartphones and transport systems to healthcare and entertainment. Students explore how computer systems are designed, developed and maintained, recognising the significant role computer scientists play in shaping society and technological advancement.

Through practical programming and problem-solving, students develop creativity, resilience and independence, while applying knowledge from mathematics, science and design technology to strengthen understanding across subjects.

Additionally, we seek to develop students’ cultural capital and a hunger for justice, encouraging reflection on the ethical and responsible use of technology in society. This also supports the development of kind hearts, as students consider the impact of digital systems on individuals and communities.

Our intent is to equip students with the relevant skills and knowledge to be successful in the rapidly changing world of technology, providing opportunities to develop capability, creativity and subject knowledge. By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable, reflective and innovative computer scientists, students are equipped to think logically, solve complex problems and thrive in a digital future.
