Curriculum Intent
The Drama Department at SJHN aims to develop confident communicators, creative thinkers and collaborative performers through an inclusive and engaging curriculum that is accessible to all students. Our intention to make drama accessible to all students is inspired by our mission of forming Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, to ensure all students develop key skills that will be required beyond their time at SJHN. We aim to foster questioning minds by encouraging students to explore theatre, performance and the world around them with curiosity, creativity and critical awareness. Through practical engagement with a range of dramatic genres, styles, practitioners and social issues, students develop a thirst for knowledge alongside the physical, vocal and devising skills needed to communicate effectively. Drama provides opportunities for students to develop empathy and kind hearts, appreciating diverse perspectives and understanding the experiences of others through performance. By examining human experiences, contemporary issues and matters of social significance, students are encouraged to cultivate a hunger for justice, recognising the power of theatre to challenge, inspire and transform society. Through regular opportunities to perform, analyse, evaluate and discuss theatre, students further develop questioning minds, becoming reflective learners, resilient collaborators and confident communicators. Our curriculum aims to promote articulate, creative and thoughtful young people that are equipped with the cultural capital, communication skills and creative independence needed for future study, employment and active participation in society.
