Curriculum intent
The Sociology Department at SJHN aims to explore human social relationships, institutions and behaviour through the AQA Sociology specification. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they critically examine how society is structured and how individuals experience the social world.
We aim for students to flourish as reflective and analytical learners through a carefully sequenced A-level course studied over two years, with all assessments taken at the end of the programme. Students develop a secure understanding of sociological theories, perspectives and methods, alongside the ability to evaluate research design, including its strengths and limitations. As they progress, they build a thirst for knowledge, applying sociological understanding to contemporary society.
The course develops skills valued by higher education and employers, including critical analysis, independent thinking and research skills. Students are encouraged to engage with real-world social issues, developing confidence in interpreting evidence and forming balanced arguments.
Furthermore, students develop kind hearts through respectful exploration of social diversity, inequality and lived experience. This supports the development of empathy and awareness of different perspectives within society.
Additionally, we seek to develop students’ cultural capital and a hunger for justice, as they consider the relationship between social structure and social action in explaining social issues and active engagement with the contemporary social world.
By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable, reflective and inquisitive sociologists, students are equipped with the analytical and evaluative skills to develop a deeper sociological awareness and the ability to think critically about society.
