Curriculum intent

The English Department at SJHN aims to foster a love of language and literature, enabling students to flourish as reflective readers, skilled writers, confident speakers and creative thinkers. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds, a thirst for knowledge and a lifelong appreciation of the power of words.

We encourage students to become independent readers and to read for pleasure, whilst developing skills in comprehension, analysis, evaluation and knowledge of a range of poetry, drama and prose texts. Through engagement with literature from different periods, cultures and perspectives, students are encouraged to develop empathy, kind hearts and an understanding of the experiences of others.

Furthermore, we strive to develop accomplished writers who can exercise creative flair and adapt their writing for different purposes, audiences and forms. We empower students with the confidence and ability to express themselves fluently through regular opportunities for discussion, debate and speaking and listening, enabling them to articulate their own views with clarity, respect and conviction.

Additionally, we seek to develop students' cultural capital and critical awareness, fostering a hunger for justice and an appreciation of the ways in which language and literature can challenge, inspire and transform society. Through exposure to a diverse range of genres, forms and key figures from the literary canon, students develop an awareness of our rich literary heritage and the wider world around them.

By leaving SJHN as confident communicators, thoughtful readers and purposeful writers, students are equipped with the literacy skills needed for all future pathways and prepared to contribute positively to society as compassionate, knowledgeable and hopeful individuals.
