curriculum intent
The History Department at SJHN aims to inspire students to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, helping them to understand their place within it. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they explore how the past has shaped the present.
We aim for students to flourish as reflective historians by equipping them with a secure chronological understanding of British history over 2000 years, alongside key developments in the wider world. Students build on prior learning from primary education to develop an inclusive understanding of change and continuity, with recurring themes such as migration, power, health and society. Through this, students develop a thirst for knowledge and a deeper appreciation of historical diversity.
Students are supported to ask perceptive questions, develop and justify their own judgements using evidence, and critically evaluate source material. In doing so, they build kind hearts, recognising how historical events and decisions have shaped societies and lives over time.
Additionally, we seek to develop students’ cultural capital and foster a hunger for justice through enrichment opportunities such as educational visits and visiting speakers, which broaden curiosity and engagement with the subject.
By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable and reflective historians, students are equipped to understand the complexity of the past and its influence on the present and future.
