Curriculum Intent
The Health and Social Care Department at SJHN aims to provide students with a solid foundation of sector-specific knowledge and skills for everyday life and progression into higher education, apprenticeships and employment. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they explore how care values, legislation and practice influence individuals across health, social care and early years settings.
We aim for students to flourish as independent and reflective learners through vocational courses at Key Stage 4 and 5, including AAQ study. These courses challenge learners with demanding content while encouraging independence, creativity and resilience. Students develop a thirst for knowledge as they build understanding of care values, communication skills and the importance of dignity, respect and person-centred practice.
The curriculum equips learners with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to meet the needs of individuals in a variety of care settings. Through real-life scenarios and practical experiences, students develop confidence in communication, problem-solving and decision-making, while reflecting on their own values and professional growth.
We also promote engagement and curiosity by encouraging students to take risks, contribute to discussion and learn from mistakes, developing growth mindsets and confidence in their progress. This supports the development of kind hearts, as students recognise the importance of empathy, compassion and ethical care.
Additionally, we seek to develop students’ cultural capital and a hunger for justice, ensuring understanding of equality, dignity and rights in care practice.
By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable, reflective and compassionate individuals, the curriculum inspires a love for learning and vocational experiences which equips students with the skills to function effectively within the workplace and further education within the health and social care sector.
