PARENTS FAQ
What kit does my child need?
Students will require suitable walking clothing, footwear, waterproofs and personal equipment for expeditions. A full kit list will be provided in advance, and guidance is given on borrowing or sharing equipment where possible. Students will be provided with a tent, cooking equipment and rucksack.
Do students need to buy expensive equipment?
No. DofE does not require specialist or high-end equipment. Staff provide advice on affordable options, and the school supports students in accessing equipment where needed.
How are expeditions kept safe?
All expeditions are carefully planned and supervised by trained staff. Students receive full training in navigation, campcraft, safety and emergency procedures before taking part. Students are also remotely tracked.
How much time will DofE take?
Most sections are completed in students’ own time, typically around one hour per week. Expedition training and practice sessions are scheduled in advance and communicated clearly.
How are activities monitored?
Students record their progress on the eDofE online system. Evidence is checked and approved by staff and external assessors where required.
What support is available for students?
Students are supported by the school’s DofE team throughout their journey, including drop-in sessions, training events and regular guidance.
What if my child is nervous or lacks confidence?
This is very common. DofE is designed to build confidence gradually, and students are fully supported by staff and their peers throughout the programme.
Are mobile phones allowed on expedition?
Mobile phone use is limited in line with DofE guidance. Students may carry a phone for emergency use, but it should not be used for navigation.
What happens if a student cannot complete a section?
Staff will work with students to adapt or change activities where appropriate, ensuring all requirements are met in a supportive way.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Weather forecasts are monitored closely. If conditions are unsafe, expeditions may be adapted, postponed or rearranged to ensure student safety.
Where do expeditions take place?
Practice and qualifying expeditions usually take place in suitable countryside locations that meet DofE requirements. Locations are chosen carefully to match students’ experience and ability.
How much walking will students do?
Walking distances are age-appropriate and in line with DofE guidance. Training is provided to help students build confidence and fitness gradually.
Who supervises and assesses the expedition?
Expeditions are supervised by trained adults and assessed by accredited DofE assessors in line with national DofE guidance
What counts as evidence?
Logs, photos, certificates, and a short supervisor note confirming regular participation and progress
