Curriculum Intent
Mathematics empowers us to understand the world and equips us with the tools to shape it. At Cardinal Newman, students become creative problem solvers, developing both numeracy and innovative thinking. Mathematics is everywhere — from financial literacy to the wonders of nature, from cutting-edge technology to gaming, social media, and science. Beyond being a core subject in itself, mathematical skills are crucial for success across many disciplines.
The Mathematics department follows the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 and GCSE, building on the numeracy foundation from Key Stage 2. Students progress from fundamental skills to more advanced problem-solving techniques, with opportunities to pursue A Level Mathematics. Through their studies, students not only acquire technical skills, but also develop qualities like integrity, perseverance, and resilience, all of which drive their journey toward “Made for Greatness.”
The logical thinking and analytical problem-solving cultivated through mathematics are vital employability skills. As technology continues to advance at an exponential rate, the challenges our students will face are ever more complex. Solving these challenges will demand creativity, abstract thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in new and unpredictable ways. Our mathematicians play a crucial role in the development of future technologies and in shaping the future of society.
