Curriculum Intent
At St. John Henry Newman Catholic School, the Religious Education curriculum is rooted in our shared mission to form Christ‑centred pilgrims of hope with kind hearts, questioning minds, a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for justice. Our curriculum enables all pupils to flourish in the fullness of life, recognising their dignity as individuals made in the image and likeness of God, a foundational principle of Catholic Social Teaching (CST), and called to be “Made for Greatness.”
Religious Education is central to the Catholic Life and Mission of the school. It is both a rigorous academic discipline and a process of formation, ensuring pupils develop secure theological knowledge alongside opportunities for spiritual, moral, social, cultural and vocational development. The curriculum is fully aligned with the Religious Education Directory (RED), the Bishops Conference Directory and the teachings of the Catholic Church, and is delivered with ambition, parity and academic distinction.
Our curriculum is broad, ambitious, coherently sequenced and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils—including those who are disadvantaged, those with SEND and those known to children’s social care—have equitable access to high-quality learning. This reflects the CST principle of the preferential option for the poor, ensuring that the most vulnerable are prioritised and supported to achieve their full God-given potential.
