‘occasiones non factum te create eos’

Welcome from miss Mohan– Head of Year 7

Hello and welcome!

I'm thrilled to welcome all our new Year 7 students — and your families — to the start of what promises to be an exciting new chapter. Starting secondary school is a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of nerves and excitement. The good news? You’re not doing it alone.

As Head of Year 7, I have the pleasure of guiding our students through this first year — helping them settle in, grow in confidence, and make the most of everything school life has to offer. Whether it’s trying out a new subject, joining a club, making new friends or just finding your way around, this is a year full of firsts — and we’re here to support every step of the way.

We place a big emphasis on kindness, respect, and helping each other. Year 7 is all about building strong foundations — not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. We want every student to feel safe, happy, and excited to come to school each day.

Here’s to a fantastic start to your secondary school journey!

One of the things that makes our Year Group so special is the strong pastoral support we offer — and at the heart of this is our incredible team of tutors.

Each Year 7 student will be part of a tutor group, led by a dedicated form tutor who they’ll see every morning. This daily check-in provides consistency, guidance, and a familiar face to turn to. Our tutor team is made up of passionate, caring staff who are genuinely invested in your child’s wellbeing and development.

The tutor is the first point of contact for students and parents, and they work closely with me to ensure that every child is supported, not just in their learning, but in their overall growth and happiness at school. From helping students settle into routines, to offering support with friendships or organisation, our tutors are here to guide, encourage and listen.

We are proud of our strong pastoral structure and believe it’s one of the key reasons our students settle so quickly and feel a real sense of belonging here.

Year 7 is the perfect time to get involved, try something new, and grow outside the classroom. From football, netball, and trampolining to a wide range of clubs and activities, there’s something for everyone — whether you want to compete, create, or just have fun.

We also encourage students to take on leadership roles early, including Heads of Year. Tutor representatives and involvement in the student council. As the year

progresses, there are chances to take part in peer mentoring, helping others while building confidence and communication skills.

These opportunities help students develop as individuals, build friendships, and feel part of the wider school community.

The pastoral programme at Cardinal Newman Catholic School enables all students to develop Personally, Socially, Emotionally and Spiritually. During our tutor time each morning, all students will access their PSHE curriculum, participate in discussion based activities through out ‘Talking Points’, engage in continual reflection regarding their attendance and behaviour and have access to high quality careers information, advice and guidance.

At Cardinal Newman Catholic School, we are passionate about developing the whole child and ensuring that they are aware of the wider world around them. Our pastoral programme is designed in a manner that deepens our students understanding of how to keep themselves safe not only emotionally and physically but also virtually.

Our students complete work in their pastoral books, which allows them to keep a record of all the important topics they cover and also refer back to it when they complete their PSHE assessments.

The year ahead is all about new beginnings, building confidence, and finding your place in our school community. For our Year 7s, this means settling into new routines, exploring exciting subjects, and forming friendships that often last for years to come.

Students will be introduced to a broader curriculum, experience specialist teaching, and have opportunities to discover what they’re passionate about — both in and outside the classroom. We’ll also be going on school trips, taking part in whole-school events, and giving students the chance to represent the school in a variety of ways — from sports teams to performances and competitions.

It’s a year where we focus on developing key skills like independence, resilience, and teamwork — all while making sure there’s plenty of fun along the way. Year 7 is the start of an amazing journey, and we’re here to make sure every student gets the most out of it.

As Head of Year 7, my ambition for all students within my year group is to feel happy, confident, and valued as they begin their journey through secondary school. I want every student to feel a strong sense of belonging, to be proud of who they are, and to know that their voice matters.
