Curriculum Intent
The Music Department at SJHN aims to enable all students to flourish through an inclusive, engaging and aspirational curriculum that fosters a lifelong appreciation of music and its power to inspire, communicate and unite. Rooted in our Catholic mission and commitment to developing Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we nurture a thirst for knowledge through the exploration of diverse musical genres, traditions and cultures, enabling students to develop a broad understanding of music from different eras and contexts. Through the disciplines of performing, composing and appraising, students develop questioning minds, critically engaging with music and exploring how it reflects and shapes the world around them. Music provides opportunities for students to develop kind hearts through collaboration, empathy and shared creative experiences, whilst building confidence, resilience and a strong sense of personal identity. Through creative expression and engagement with a diverse range of voices and perspectives, students cultivate a hunger for justice, recognising music's role in giving voice to individuals and communities and promoting understanding across cultures. By leaving SJHN as confident, creative and reflective musicians, students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and appreciation to continue enjoying, creating and engaging with music throughout their lives.
